HR 313: A Big Middle Finger from US to Growing Global Consensus

Lamar Smith’s proposed new law for the US, HR 313 (aka; Drug Trafficking Safe 3 Harbor Elimination Act of 2011) ,  can be seen as a big middle finger from the US elite to the rest of the world, and also as a legislative nightstick for beating their own citizens.

As global rationalisations and wisdom finally start to favour a more progressive and compassionate drug policy, this proposed new law will criminalise any Americans who even discuss the idea of consuming legal substances abroad if those substances are illegal in the US.

This comes in the fortieth year of the war on drugs, a year when the EU has announced that all member states are now free to determine their own drug policies; consensus in the Latin American block favours a coordinated approach of legalisation; and, the eminent Global Commission on Drug Policy is appealing for an end to this devastating US-led ‘war’.

As she was hiding from a small, low-flying passenger jet, Jenny, a US citizen, commented:

“What the fuck?  I’ve told everyone back home I’m gonna be doing ayahuasca in Peru – are they gonna arrest me when I go back?  That’s crazy!  I hate the police, they follow me everywhere, they even broke into my condo in Florida…  I bet those douche bags are gonna monitor every ones emails for that now.”

So, should the rest of the world actually enter an enlightened new era of drug policy and reap many wondrous benefits, this legislation will drag good US citizens like Jenny even further into the brutal dystopia of their ultra conservative ruling minority and actually criminalise them for exploiting foreign wisdom and experiencing foreign cultures.

One small suggestion from man, one giant leap for totalitarianism.

One small suggestion from a small man. Lamar would fit right in with the Taliban.
